Legal Heritage Institute/Summer Law Institute

The Foundation has discontinued the Legal Heritage Institute, the high school legal literacy program it ran from 2001 to 2006, and has created a partnership with the Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF) to support CRF's Summer Law Institute, a weeklong summer program at UCLA for high school students interested in learning about the American legal system. The Foundation has awarded CRF a $25,000 grant to help underwrite the cost of attendance for students with financial need, and CRF will incorporate elements of the Legal Heritage Institute into the Summer Law Institute's curriculum.

CRF will host the Summer Law Institute this year from July 29, 2007 to August 4, 2007, at the UCLA campus. The application materials for the Summer Law Institute are available on CRF's website. The application must be postmarked by April 6, 2007, and include a $50 registration fee, which will be applied to the cost of tuition if the applicant is accepted to the program. The registration fee may be waived for students who can document financial need.

Tuition to attend the Summer Law Institute is $1,200, which covers all costs during the week of the program, and students are also responsible for paying for transportation to and from the program. The Foundation's financial support of Summer Law Institute will underwrite some full and/or partial scholarships that will enable students with financial need to attend, and scholarship applications are also available at CRF's website.

Each summer from 2001 to 2006, the Foundation hosted the Legal Heritage Institute for upcoming high school seniors. The Legal Heritage Institute brought the students to courthouses and law firms to learn about the legal system, the rule of law, and the importance of an independent judiciary, and offered students a first-hand view of the courts and government in action. Over 170 California high school students participated in the program.
