Foundation of the State Bar Supports Constitutional Rights Foundation's Summer Law Institute
Los Angeles, CA February 20, 2007 Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF) and the Foundation of the State Bar of California today announced a partnership supporting CRF's Summer Law Institute, a weeklong summer program at UCLA for high school students interested in learning more about the American legal system. The Foundation has awarded CRF a $25,000 grant to help underwrite the cost of attendance for students with financial need, and CRF will incorporate elements of the Legal Heritage Institute, a similar program the Foundation ran in previous years, into Summer Law Institute's curriculum. The Foundation has discontinued the LHI program. "CRF is both honored and pleased to have the support of the Foundation of the State Bar of California. This collaboration will provide many more students in financial need with a highly motivating and quality educational experience, as well as expand their knowledge of our legal system and our legal heritage," said Marshall Croddy, Director of Programs for CRF. "CRF's Summer Law Institute exposes young people to the inner workings of the judicial system and introduces them to the legal profession as a rewarding and stimulating career path," said Leslie Hatamiya, Executive Director of the Foundation. "The Foundation is pleased to have the spirit and substance of the Legal Heritage Institute live on, and given CRF's considerable experience in hosting civics education programs for youth, we are confident that CRF will do an excellent job in bringing out the best aspects of both programs in this year's SLI." CRF will host Summer Law Institute this year from July 29, 2007, to August 4, 2007, at the UCLA campus. The application materials for Summer Law Institute are available on CRF's website at the following link: http://www.crf-usa.org/law_government/sli.htm. The application must be postmarked by April 6, 2007, and include a $50 registration fee, which will be applied to the cost of tuition if the applicant is accepted to the program. The registration fee may be waived for students who can document financial need. Tuition to attend Summer Law Institute is $1,200, which covers all costs during the week of the program, and students are also responsible for paying for transportation to and from the program. The Foundation's financial support of Summer Law Institute will underwrite some full and/or partial scholarships that will enable students with financial need to attend, and scholarship applications are also available at CRF's website. From 2001 to 2006, the Foundation hosted the weeklong Legal Heritage Institute for high school students. The Legal Heritage Institute brought the students to courthouses and law firms to learn about the legal system, the rule of law, and the importance of an independent judiciary, and offered students a first-hand view of the courts and government in action. Over 170 California high school students participated in the program.
